Barry has more than 40 years experience as a clinical scholar, researcher and consultant to persons with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and related disabilities, and with individuals with emotional/behavioral challenges and their families. He is a Speech-Language Pathologist and holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Barry has developed family-centered programs for at-risk and newly diagnosed toddlers with social-communication disabilities and ASD in hospital and university clinic settings. He consults to schools and agencies internationally, from early intervention through adult services. Barry was a tenured Professor in two university Master’s and Doctoral graduate programs, and served as an Associate Professor on the faculty of the Brown University Program in Medicine (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry).
Since 1998, Barry has been the Director of Childhood Communication Services, a private practice, and is an Adjunct Professor in the Center for the Study of Human Development, Brown University. He has published books and more than 120 articles and chapters on ASD, childhood communication disorders and development, and has given more than 700 seminars and workshops internationally. He writes a regular column for Autism Spectrum Quarterly Magazine, and is the author of the forthcoming book,Uniquely Human: Seeing Autism Through a Different Lens (Simon and Schuster)
Barry is the developer and co-author of The SCERTS Model (Prizant, Wetherby, Rubin, Laurent & Rydell, 2006), an educational model for individuals with special needs that has been adopted in more than 10 countries. He is co-editor of the book: Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Developmental, Transactional Perspective (Wetherby & Prizant, 2000), and co-author of the CSBS and CSBS-DP assessment instruments (Wetherby & Prizant, 1993, 2002) and the two volume manual, The SCERTS Model: A comprehensive educational approach for children with ASD (Prizant, Wetherby, Rubin, Laurent & Rydell, 2006). Barry served on two NIH Committees (Screening & Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders, and State of the Science in Autism) and has received numerous awards, as well as widespread recognition for his clinical and scholarly work, including Fellowship in the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, the 2005 Princeton University-Eden Foundation Career Award “for improving the quality of life for individuals with autism”, and the 2013 “Divine Neurotypical Award of GRASP (Global Regional Asperger Syndrome Partnership) .
Over the past 19 years, Barry has developed and co-facilitates an annual parent weekend retreat attended by parents of children with ASD in collaboration with Community Autism Resources, a MA parent run family support center. He established a fundraising conference (ASD Symposium) that has raised more than $400,000. to support family activities and the annual retreat, in collaboration with Community Autism Resources, a parent established and parent-run MA state funded family support center.
